Mississippi Declares October 18, 2012 Lights On Afterschool Day

Mary Peavey, who serves on the Board of The Afterschool Alliance in Washington, D.C., gave a big Thank You recently to Governor Phil Bryant as he signed a proclamation officially making October 18th LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL DAY in Mississippi.
Governor Bryant stated: LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL is a yearly celebration of afterschool programs promoting the critical importance of quality programs for youth by ensuring lights stay on and doors remain open for all youth during the out-of-school-time hours.
The Afterschool Alliance and Lights On Afterschool exists to combat the fact that more than 15 million children are unsupervised between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. nationwide. Children who participate in afterschool programs during these hours are 50% less likely to smoke, drink or use drugs. Research shows that participation in afterschool programs also improves school attendance and performance and increases expectations for the future.
The U.S. Senate has also unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution recognizing Lights On Afterschool celebrations and the importance of afterschool programs to kids, parents and communities. Mississippi Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker are strong supporters of the afterschool initiative, said Peavey. As we study successful programs across the country, it is amazing and gratifying to hear stories from children who have had quality programs to make a difference in their lives. The school day is most often reinforced when a child is challenged to express his own creativity afterschool and it is a proven fact that these successful afterschool programs improve individual confidence and self esteem.
Peavey Electronics is proud to be involved in the Afterschool initiatives. Peavey Electronics Corporation President, Mary Peavey, serves on the Afterschool Alliance board of directors. She has been an active supporter of afterschool programs and the Afterschool Alliance since 2005, and helped make history when she was part of the team that helped make Mississippi the first state to offer a car tag that benefits afterschool programs. The new tags carry the slogan, Afterschool is Key.
We're truly grateful to have leaders like Governor Bryant, who understand the importance of afterschool programs, said Peavey.
We have worked with the Afterschool Alliance and our leaders to make afterschool programs a priority across the nation, said Peavey. Today, public support for afterschool programs is high but the number of unsupervised children is growing. We've made significant progress, but there is still a lot of work to do.
