Frequently asked questions

What is the power output of the Peavey PBK 12BT?

A total of 800 watts (peak). This is a bi-amplified speaker with 750 watts delivered to the woofer and 50 watts to the tweeter.

What inputs and outputs does the PBK 12BT have?

Two input channels each feature balanced TRS and XLR inputs, while the third input channel offers 1/8-inch stereo and RCA connections. Bluetooth streaming and speaker pairing also supported. The PBK 12BT has an XLR link output for linking speakers or pairing a sub.

Does the Peavey PBK 12BT have Bluetooth?

Yes. You can stream audio to the PBK 12BT via Bluetooth, and you can pair two speakers together via Bluetooth.

Can the PBK 12BT be used as a floor monitor?

Yes. The PBK 12Bt is designed to be used either as a main speaker or as a floor monitor. The angled cabinet design allows you to place it on the floor and direct sound towards performers.

What EQ and DSP features does the PBK 12BT include?

The PBK 12BT's onboard DSP powers EQ, tone control, and a dynamic bass boost function. The EQ features three preset modes you can select: Speech/Monitor for a flat response, Contour for boosted bass and treble, and Max Contour for additional bass boost and treble. The Bass tone control offers +/-6dB for frequencies below 700Hz, and the Treble tone control offers +/-6dB for frequencies above 1kHz.

Does the PBK 12BT have a cooling fan?

No, the PBK 12BT employs passive cooling via heat sink. This eliminates fan-induced noise during quiet passages.

What is included in the box with the PBK 12BT?

In the box you'll find the PBK 12BT powered speaker and an IEC power cord.

What powered speaker works well for small live venues and events?

Small events and clubs (50-150 people) are a good application for multiple powered speakers with 10-inch or 12-inch woofers, combined with a powered subwoofer for balanced bass. Speakers in the 300W to 500W range are appropriate.

Is the PBK 12BT a good choice for a church or house of worship sound system?

Yes, the PBK 12BT is equipped for all common worship sound applications. You can connect it to sound system, or plug in a microphone directly to use it as a solo speaker. You can stream backing tracks and intermission music via Bluetooth. And you can use it as a main speaker on a stand, or as a floor monitor for the stage.

Can I use the PBK 12BT for DJ events?

Yes; the link output makes it easy to chain additional speakers or link to a subwoofer. The PBK 12BT can be pole-mounted for elevated coverage. A separate powered subwoofer should be used for balanced bass response.

How does a 12-inch powered speaker compare to a 15-inch for live sound?

All other things being equal, a 12-inch powered speaker will sound more focused and defined in the midrange (vocal) region, while a 15-inch powered speaker will have deeper, extended bass response. Both sizes are commonly combined with a powered subwoofer to handle the lowest octaves of bass. You'll also find that 12-inch powered speakers are lighter, smaller, and easier to transport relative to their 15-inch alternatives.

What does "bi-amplified" mean in a powered speaker?

Bi-amplified means that a powered speaker contains two separate power amps, one for the high-frequency driver and one for the low-frequency woofer. Each amplifier is optimized for its frequency range, resulting in greater fidelity and optimized headroom.

What is DSP and why does it matter in a powered speaker?

DSP is short for Digital Signal Processing, and it allows speaker manufacturers to give you a lot of control over your sound with requiring a lot of analog components in the speaker. DSP powers everything from EQ and signal mixing to crossover management, noise reduction, overload protection and much more. You don't really need to know the fine details of the DSP on your speaker, but you should look for a powered speaker with DSP that advertises at least 24-bit/48kHz resolution for the best fidelity and dynamic range.

What is SPL and how much do I need?

SPL is short for Sound Pressure Level, and it's one of the many ways we can measure sound in decibels. An increase of 6dB SPL doubles the perceived loudness, so a speaker that has a 6dB higher SPL rating is twice as loud. There's no magic number for how much SPL you need; it's going to depend on the size of the room and how many people are in it (human bodies absorb quite a bit of sound).
